Year 3s Become Environmental Officers for a Day at Whiteman Park
Our Year 3 students ventured into the natural beauty of Whiteman Park for an engaging and educational experience. As part of the Conservation Calculators program, they were given the unique opportunity to act as environmental officers, using their science, mathematics, and HASS skills to protect some of Australia’s precious wildlife.
With great enthusiasm, the students learned how to monitor the local quenda population and the critically endangered woylie. Armed with measuring tapes and scales, they got hands-on experience weighing and tracking the animals, just like real conservationists!
The Conservation Calculators program offers an immersive way for students to understand the impact of conservation efforts on endangered species, while reinforcing their classroom learning in a practical setting. By engaging in this activity, the Year 3s could directly see how math and science are essential tools in environmental protection.
It was a day full of excitement, learning, and a deepened appreciation for the wildlife we share our environment with. The Year 3s returned to school with new insights, memories, and the pride of knowing they played a role — however small — in protecting Australia’s unique animals.
