Book Week Winner – Marleh

This year, Southern Hills combined National Science Week and Book Week to create an interdisciplinary learning experience that was both informative and inspiring for our students.

One of the activities involved students honing their creative writing and storytelling skills.

We’re thrilled to announce that Marleh (Year 7), dressed as her character Jasmine (and Loulou, her pug) in the photo above, won the ‘Most Engaging Story’ prize for Book Week 2024!

Congratulations also to Alissa (Year 8) and Hannah (Year 7), who received honourable mentions.

Here is the story Marleh wrote.

—————————————

On the outskirts of a small town called Willowbrook lived a spirited girl named Jasmine. She was an only child but had a heart as wild as the forests that surrounded her home. Her constant companion was Loulou, a pug with eyes that sparkled like dewdrops on a sunny morning.

One sunny Saturday, Jasmine decided it was time to explore the nearby forest that she had been curious about for some time. She packed a small backpack with snacks, a water bottle, and a map. Loulou wagged her tail excitedly, sensing an adventure. They set off, the sun casting long shadows through the tall pine trees.

The trail was well-marked at first, but as they climbed higher, the path grew narrower. Jasmine followed the winding trail, her trainers crunching on fallen leaves. Loulou trotted ahead, sniffing every rock and tree root. They were both blissfully unaware that the path had vanished.

Hours passed, and the forest thickened around them. Jasmine’s heart raced as she realised they were lost. She reached for the map, but it was gone—it had slipped out of her pocket during a steep climb. Panic threatened to overwhelm her, but she took a deep breath. She had to stay calm—for Loulou’s sake.

The forest was not kind. Thorny bushes scratched Jasmine’s arms, and fallen logs blocked their way. Loulou whimpered, her little paws muddy and tired. Jasmine hoisted her onto her shoulder, determined to find their way back.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, Jasmine stumbled upon a rushing stream. She knelt, cupping water in her hands for Loulou. They drank together, the cold water soothing their parched throats. But the stream was a barrier—they needed to cross it.

Jasmine suddenly spotted a fallen tree bridging the stream. It was slippery, covered in moss, and the water roared below. She took a deep breath and stepped onto the log, Loulou clinging to her shoulder. The pug’s eyes widened, and she held on like a furry koala. They shuffled across, hearts pounding.

Next came the rocky cliffs. Jasmine climbed, her fingers scraped and bleeding. Loulou yipped from her backpack, urging her on. At the top, they saw a breathtaking view—the entire valley spread out before them. But there was no sign of civilisation.

Night fell, and Jasmine huddled with Loulou under a rocky overhang. She wrapped her jacket around them, whispering promises that they’d find their way home. The stars blinked overhead, and Jasmine wondered if anyone was looking for them.

Days turned into a week. Jasmine and Loulou survived on berries, rainwater, and sheer determination. They encountered wild animals—a curious fox, a majestic hawk, and even a grumpy old bear. Each encounter tested their courage and resourcefulness.

Finally, on the eighth day, they stumbled upon a familiar landmark—a twisted oak tree with a heart-shaped scar. Tears filled Jasmine’s eyes. She knew the way home! With Loulou’s tail wagging, they followed the familiar path, their legs shaky but hearts resolute.

And then, there it was—the cosy little cottage nestled among the pines. Jasmine’s parents rushed out, tears streaming down their faces. They hugged her tightly, and Loulou licked her cheek. The whole town celebrated their return, and Jasmine vowed never to take a simple hike for granted again.

From that day on, Jasmine and Loulou became local legends—the girl who found her way home and the pug who never left her side. They shared their story with wide-eyed children, reminding them that even in the darkest forests, courage and love could light the way.

And so, Jasmine’s adventure became a cherished tale, whispered around campfires and etched into the hearts of those who dared to explore the wilderness.
